Rekey, repair, or replace?
These services solve different problems. Rekeying changes which key operates a compatible cylinder. Repair addresses a mechanical or installation problem. Replacement changes the hardware itself. A provider should inspect the locks, understand why you want a change, and explain which option fits.
When rekeying may make sense
Rekeying is commonly requested after moving into a property, losing a key, ending a tenant or employee relationship, recovering from a key-control concern, or trying to make compatible locks operate with the same key. The cylinder is adjusted and new keys are issued while much of the existing hardware remains.
Compatibility matters. Different brands, keyways, cylinder formats, electronic locks, worn components, and some low-cost hardware may not be suitable for rekeying or keying alike. Count the locks and identify visible brands before requesting service, but let the provider confirm on site.
When repair deserves consideration
A lock that feels loose, sticks, turns without retracting the latch, or works only when the door is pulled may not need replacement. The issue can involve fasteners, a worn key, internal parts, strike alignment, hinges, weather movement, or damage to the door and frame. Repair should address the cause, not just the symptom.
Continuing to force a difficult key can break it or damage the cylinder. Stop using excessive pressure and include the behavior in your request.
When replacement may be the better option
- The lock is significantly worn, corroded, damaged, or unreliable.
- The hardware cannot be rekeyed to the desired keyway.
- The opening needs a different function, finish, grade, or accessibility feature.
- A smart, keypad, restricted-key, or higher-security option is desired.
- Missing parts, prior modifications, or poor installation make repair impractical.
- The door needs compatible hardware after damage or remodeling.
Replacement is an opportunity to address fit and security, but the door and frame still matter. New hardware should operate smoothly without forcing, binding, or leaving a poorly engaged latch.
“Keyed alike” and “master keyed” are not the same.
Keyed-alike locks use the same operating key. A master-key system creates different access levels, allowing some keys to open selected doors and a master to open multiple groups. Master keying requires deliberate planning.
Moving into a home or business
Inventory exterior doors, gates, mail areas, storage, offices, and other controlled openings. Decide who needs access and whether one key should operate multiple compatible locks. For a business, document every issued key and establish who can approve duplication.
Electronic locks also need an access reset. Remove unknown users, change administrator credentials, update codes, review connected accounts, replace batteries if appropriate, and secure mechanical override keys.
Lost or stolen keys
If the key can be connected to the address or was stolen with identifying information, treat the risk differently from a key lost in an unknown location. Discuss prompt rekeying or replacement. For vehicles, ask whether the missing electronic key can be removed from authorized memory.
What affects an estimate
Providers may consider the number of cylinders, hardware type, compatible keyway, keys requested, condition, travel, time, parts, electronic programming, master-key design, and door adjustments. Ask whether the estimate includes each cylinder, new keys, hardware, labor, service call, and applicable charges.
Information to send dispatch
Include the property type, number of doors, number of lock cylinders, visible brands, whether any working keys remain, whether you want one key for compatible openings, the reason for the change, and any known mechanical problem. That information helps identify the likely scope before travel.
