“I need a key” can describe several different services.
Vehicle keys have evolved from simple metal blades to integrated security devices. The correct request may involve cutting a mechanical pattern, pairing a transponder with an immobilizer, programming remote buttons, adding a proximity key, creating an emergency blade, or doing several of those tasks together.
Traditional and transponder keys
A traditional key operates mechanically. A transponder key also contains a chip recognized by the vehicle’s immobilizer. A correctly cut transponder key may turn the ignition but fail to start the engine until programming is complete. Conversely, an electronic problem does not always mean the mechanical cut is wrong.
Provide the year, make, model, trim if known, vehicle identification number availability, and whether any working key remains. Mid-year changes and prior ignition replacement can affect compatibility.
Remote-head keys and key fobs
Remote buttons and engine authorization are related but distinct functions on many vehicles. Explain whether the key starts the vehicle, whether the buttons lock or unlock, whether passive entry works, and whether the issue began after a battery change, water exposure, impact, or another repair.
Replacement shells can sometimes address broken cases or loose blades without replacing every electronic component, but worn buttons, circuit damage, battery contacts, and incorrect parts require accurate evaluation. Do not assume an inexpensive online fob is compatible merely because it looks the same.
Proximity and push-to-start systems
Smart keys may support passive entry, push-button start, remote functions, and a concealed mechanical blade. Programming capability varies. The provider may need the vehicle present, all existing keys, stable vehicle battery voltage, security access, and compatible hardware.
If every smart key is lost, the process can differ substantially from adding a spare. Tell dispatch whether the vehicle is locked, where it is parked, and whether towing or access restrictions exist.
A working spare can reduce future disruption.
Adding a second key while one valid key remains may be simpler than recovering from an all-keys-lost situation. Store the spare securely and test every function before relying on it.
All keys lost
When no usable key remains, a provider may need to originate the mechanical cut and establish electronic authorization. The exact procedure depends on the vehicle. Some requests can be completed on site; others may require unavailable parts, specialty equipment, manufacturer procedures, or dealership support.
Prepare photo identification and proof of ownership. Providers should not create or program keys without reasonable authorization.
Lost or stolen key security
A replacement key does not necessarily stop a missing key from starting the vehicle. Ask whether the vehicle supports removing lost credentials from authorized memory and whether all remaining keys must be present during that procedure. Mechanical door access may still require separate consideration.

- How many keys will work after service and whether lost keys are removed

Why a key request may need diagnosis
A no-start condition can involve the key, immobilizer, ignition, vehicle battery, starter circuit, steering lock, or another system. A remote problem can be the battery, buttons, receiver, programming, or wiring. Describe symptoms rather than insisting on one solution. That gives the provider room to verify whether key service is actually appropriate.
